Parents can 'relax', study shows violent video games don't impact youth aggression.

Text title: Parents can 'relax', study shows violent video games don't impact youth aggression.

Text type: Article

Text creator: Brittney Deguara

Text purpose: To inform parents that violence in-game does not affect youth aggression.

Date: 08/11/21

Summary

This article says that a study shows that violent games do not meaningfully increase the players' aggressiveness. A New Zealand-led study, published in the Royal Society Open Science, and Dr Aaron Drummond found that violent games don't lead to an increase in youth aggression. A meta-analysis experiment was conducted with 28 existing studies, which featured around 21,000 participants who played violent games for longer than three months. In conclusion, with their study they recommend the parents to be more relieved. However, rather than worrying about whether if it's violent or not, he says that parents should look out for the contents of the game. This is because some games need some maturity to be responsible.

Critical Literacy Question: Why are you reading this text?

Study shows that violent games do not affect youth aggression. For instance, the article "Parents can 'relax', study shows violent video games don't impact youth aggression" claims that violent game doesn't necessarily mean they would affect the players' behaviour in the real world. This means that parents can relax about what their kids are playing. However, the author of this article tells that that they should be careful of the content. I am reading this article because I have a similar situation at hand.

Reflecting on Passion Project

As for this project, my group was supposed to be doing a manga for our passion and love for anime. However, this changed because we didn't have a lot of time. Therefore, we just made collages full of different kinds of anime. The people that were in my group were Rojan, Tristan, Ian and Daniel.

Group Reflecting:

At first, there was not a lot of productivity and we changed our project midway. However, our second project went well and much more fast productivity rate because we knew what to do. I think, some people in my group did more work than others but it's still ok because everyone participated at the end.

Self Reflecting:

I learnt that I work well with people that I know and get work much faster. Also, I would plan out the whole entire project before going at it. This is because we didn't really know what to do for our first idea on the project. Therefore, considering other aspects that might hinder us from doing our passion project will help us in the future.

Squid Game: How a hyper-violent Korean series became Netflix’s biggest hit - Reflection Section

Text title: Squid Game: How a hyper-violent Korean series became Netflix’s biggest hit

Text type: Article

Text Creator: Robert Moran

Text Purpose: To inform its audience that Netflix's biggest show is the now-infamous "Squid Game"

Date: 19/10/21

Summary:

A violent, blood gushing Korean show has made it to the top of Netflix's charts! It's a show about indebt people who are in need of money are introduced into a brutal, death, money game. Each death would add up to the prize money. There's a total of 456 players. The players are said to play 6 games, on who stands at the top will win the prize money all by to himself/herself. However, the winning player was too traumatized by the fact that many people died for just a sum of money for him. At the end of the series, he got in contact with the people who are controlling the game. Then a sudden dark screen moves in place. This means a second season would probably come out.

Critical literacy question:

In whose interest is this for?

This article is mostly to let the public know that Netflix's biggest show has changed. Netflix is one of the most-watched and well known watching app worldwide. Therefore, having its biggest show changed had an effect on many people. For instance, some audiences might have different biased shows. In conclusion, this article is really for Netflixs' customers' interest.

Reflection For this Year's Esol Class. Lvl 1 NCEA

In my opinion, the best lessons we had for this year's Esol class is the games period when we had too much time for the year. This is because it was a good way to relieve the stress of subjects.

I enjoyed doing some grammar lessons and reading the book "The River" because Ongrammar was one of my biggest weaknesses and the book was interesting.

One thing that I am proud of was my speech assessment. This is because I am normally shy about public speaking.

A thing that I could do better next time is not to talk loudly and listen more to the teacher.

Overall, the Esol class was great this year.

Butterflies by Patricia Grace - Reflection Section

 Text title: Butterflies

Text type: Short story

Text creator:  Patricia Grace

Text purpose: To evaluate that people have different perspectives.

Date: 09/29/21

Summary:

In this short story, the author begins with a girl getting her hair done by her grandmother. The girl was recently started living with her grandparents and this morning she was getting ready for school. Both of her grandparents are caring for her and wanting the best for her school. As she arrives home from school, her grandfather was hoeing the cabbages and her grandmother was picking up some beans. Both stopped their work to go to their granddaughter and ask her about what her story was about. She began reading. It was a story about a girl killing some butterflies. Whoever, her teacher wasn't so pleased with the story since the teacher thinks that butterflies are beautiful creatures. As the girl gaze in confusion, the grandparents answered "because you see" the grandfather said, "your teacher gets her cabbages in the supermarket". This means that they view butterflies as pests towards their vegetation.

Critical literacy question:

What does the author want us to know?

The author wanted us to know that everyone has different perspectives. For instance, the teacher's response towards the girl's story was the opposite of what the little girl's perspective perceives. Meaning that the teacher sees butterflies as elegant creatures whereas the grandparents see them as pests towards their garden.

Killed By a Knife by "Tom Ensor" - Reflection section

Text title: Killed By a Knife

Text type:  Short story

Text creator: Tom Ensor

Text purpose: To show the understanding of figurative languages through the use of a short story.

Date: 21/09/21

Summary

In this text, the narrator talks about how he felt through slitting through the neck of an old sheep. This sheep was on their farm for years now and he was given the opportunity to kill it. At first, he felt as he was a candle melting away with nervousness. looking through the sheep's eyes at it trembles with calm fear, the narrator held it and quickly slit its trough. At the end of the short story, the narrator talks about regretting what he has done to the old poor sheep.

Critical Question - How are children, teenagers, young adults, and adults constructed in this text?

In the text, "Killed By a Knife" by Tom Ensor, young adults are portrayed as if they were sensitive killers. For instance, in the last two sentences of the short story, the narrator talks about how the blood came running down from its trough and the last sentence "I rose in a dace, hardly believing what I had done". This means that the narrator was ordered to kill the poor old sheep, and hesitated so to do it. However, at the end, he still did it but regretted it.

Poem Analysis - Unfamiliar text practice.

Today we've read the poem "Sad Joke On A Marae" by Apirana Taylor and coming with an analysis at the end. Link

Write the following questions, with their answers, in your English book:

  • What senses does the poet mainly appeal to?
- Sight and sound
  • Which images are most powerful or striking?
- The carvings, the teku teku rage.
  • Which sounds are particularly memorable?
- The teku teku sound
  • Which words do you find most striking/vivid/disturbing/moving?
- The tongue being ripped out,
  • What are your first impressions of the speaker of the poem (if there is one)?
 -  Angry about not being able to remember urban Maori because of the decline of the Maori language back then.
  1. Why do you think the Māori language is used in this poem? - Emphasizing that it's all he knows. Even lots of Maori people have lost their urban language but there's still hope.
  2. Is this a rhyming poem, or a free verse poem? Why do you think that is? - Free verse because the man is just a simple man.
  3. Who are:”Kupe Paikea Te KootiRewi and Te Rauparaha”? - They're all famous figures.
  4. In the third stanza, the poem uses a pepeha style. What is a pepeha, and why would it be important in this poem. It's to make sure that he knows more about his culture.

Find examples of the following techniques and explain why they have been included:
  1. metaphor - I saw them, grim death and wooden ghosts. That something was gone.
  2. personification - Above me, the Teko Teko raged. He ripped his tongue from his mouth. - Teku teku was disappointed because he doesn't really know the Maori language.
  3. strong verbs - Teku teku raged, more impact.
  4. the first-person pronoun - I, to show that this poem was about himself.
  5. repetition -Tihei Mauriora, to emphasise the knowledge he holds towards his urban language.

Author's purpose: The tragedy of a young Maori who can't speak his urban language and wants to learn more.

Critical Literacy Questions:

Why are we reading this text?

- Our class studied this text because it had many extensive vocabularies and was written like in the olden days. Also to help us understand more complicated written texts. For instance, I know new words such as adequate, linguistic and stupendous. Adequate means acceptable in amount, linguistic means relating to language, and stupendous meansextremely impressive.

Pathos, Logos, and Ethos

This week we are starting to study the world of persuasive language features. Therefore, today we are learning what is Pathos, Logos, and Ethos.

Pathos - Having the feature to recall the audience's emotions. For example, many advertisements use pathos by having an adorable animal drink their brand/product. This shows pathos because it is relating to the customer's feeling through having a cute animal in the advertisement.

Logos - In other words "appeal to logic". It is a way of convincing the audience through facts and reasonings. For instance, This world is suffering from a global pandemic since carbon emissions have been increasing fast throughout the years. This shows logos by having facts backing it up.

Ethos - Ethos means getting the audience's trust. For example, if the text doesn't show any credibility the audience would not reside towards that text. Ethos is a way to persuade the audience that they can trust your side of the argument and have the authority to do so. For instance, As the president, I am qualified to say that this would be our best course of action towards the military decrement.

Blog questions

What are we doing?

- In this blog post, we are studying what pathos, logos, and ethos mean.

Why are we doing it?

- We are studying this because this will help us with our current assessment.

What questions do I have?

- I would like a more refined definition of ethos because I do not quite understand the meaning still.

Should the trip enjoyable or educational or both?

Reasons why it should be just enjoyable:

This is our time to take some stress off school and some students don't have enough to go on family trips on their own time. Therefore, having an enjoyable will not just boost their component, it will relieve their life's stresses. Another good reason why it should just be enjoyable is that some educational trips make some students not wanting to learn because most of them find it boring. Furthermore, we hardworking students deserve to have an enjoyable trip because it is a time where students can hang out with all of their classmates at the same time.

The place that I recommend going is to the Christchurch Gondola place or the Alpine Ice skating venue.

How did I feel during my arrival In New Zealand?

It was about 5 years ago, I still remembered my first step out of the airport coming on this new profound island called New Zealand. *Swoosh~~~* as the strong breeze flies by. The weather was bad when I and my three brothers went out of the airport. Strong winds and a sky covered in clouds were present. Therefore, it was very cold for us and very unusual. My home country - which is the Philippines - is a tropical island, meaning it was primarily hot over there. But then, I had to travel across the world to live the rest of my life in this cold, freezing country. It was very different indeed!

A week later, I’ve gotten used to the cold temperatures and settling in this country. Then, a shout from my mum was heard in the entire house telling me and my brothers that the next day would be the first. The first day of school. I was nervous as an ostrich, I wanted to bury my head onto the ground as well. Then, the next day came. Surprisingly, none of my brothers cried and our mum talked to one of the teachers. After that, the teacher told us that we would be okay. Slowly, the teacher opened the door. I caught a glimpse of wild kids running around and some of them sitting around a table. Then when I entered, the eyes of the room was on me. The sudden shake of my knees nearly put me down to my knees but I bravely held on.  *Stomp!*as a random kid ran towards me and introduce himself. He was of another ethnicity than me but after that first meeting, we became friends.

The next day, I was excited to bring one of the cultured dishes that my mum made for me. As I open my lid, the familiar aroma filled my nostrils with delight. But as I was about to take a spoon full, I turned around and saw others looking at my food. Their mouth opens… “Oi new kid, are you eating catfish? Eww,” I felt enraged because they disrespected my mother’s cooking but at the same time. I felt as if I was looking down on an edge of the cliff. As they talk more badly about my lunch, the ground under my feet started crumbling. Since then, I didn’t dare to bring any food that relates to my culture or any of my mum’s food.

A whole month passes by, I started becoming homesick. I missed my friends and family where I could just be comfortable and not be wary of my actions or what I do. I missed how I could play all day and not worrying about being judged. I missed home...

Reflection Section: Simon Sinek - Simon Sinek - On millennials In The Workplace

Text Title: Simon Sinek - On Millennials In The Workplace

Text Type: Video Text

Text Creator:  Inside Out

Text Purpose: To help understand Millenials and improve wellbeing through reducing screen time.

Date: 2021 June 10

Summary:

In this interview, Simon Sinek talks about his 4 main points about Millenials. Firstly parenting. Due to the lack of good parenting/leadership around the world today, the current generations are lacking confidence and has the needs for short term reliefs. The second point was a technology/social media. According to him, due to the temptation of wanting to check/use a phone. The innovations are minimizing within the future generations this is because of addiction towards phone use. Thirdly, having he needs of easy work: impatience. The generations today have become more impatient because of instant gratitude. Lastly, the environment. He talks about how we can manage the temptation of phone usage. For example, people should not charge their phone in their bedroom to resist temptation.

Critical Thinking:

Is the text fair?

In my opinion that text was not fair due to him not having the/a Millenial's perspective. A lack of the opposition's point of view can determine the argument.  Therefore, I think this text is not fair prior to a lack of judgement to the other perspective.

1 thing that will relieve stress.

Today in Esol we talked about how stress can lead to terrible times. For instance, having too tired to do work or too panicked to do something.

Therefore, to solve this problem we listed many ways to relieve stress.

My main assortment to relieve is through getting enough sleep. For example, I would need to sleep at 9Pm since I often get up at 6am in the morning. So I could get at least 8 hours or more sleep.

Another way of how to relieve stress is leisurement. For me, I would play games with my friends or just have fun doing something other than work.

Cultural stuff - DLO (What is it?)

 Culture:
A widespread of custom beliefs throughout a society that escorts people. The description of a particular group of people who live life in a specific way. Culture can be past down by generations, continuously changing. Arts, dancing, singing, food, values, language are all examples of cultural factors.
185,811 Different Cultures Photos and Premium High Res Pictures - Getty Images
Society:
Every society has culture, but they are not the same thing.
Society includes people who share mutual beliefs, values and overall the way of living. Society in this case is about a group of people who live or are connected in a geographic area who interact with each other more than they interact with the outsiders. An example of this is NZ.
What is an Ideal Society?

Subculture:
A group that has similar but different beliefs and behaviors from a larger society. Some examples of subcultures are hippies, goths, emo, and etc.

Counterculture:
It is when the subculture interferes with the bigger culture’s rules. An example of this would be the hippies in the 1960’s. The punks in the 1970’s.

  • An old friend -

*Achoo!* Giggling, as I said to myself “It’s bery windy todae”. Random thoughts of sluggish slang always cheers

me up. It was late in the afternoon. That day, me and my family decided to go out to one of the bays of

Port Hills. My family was getting packed and changing to their warm clothes as I decided to go for a stroll.

I glanced over the sea as its waters bashed unto the sea wall and seagulls soaring over the horizon as

the sun slowly set downThen I saw her. Through the corner of my eye, I saw an old, wrinkly, lady sitting alone on a bench.

She was wearing a grey winter jacket with some black panther pajamas. As the cold breeze passed by,

it told me ‘don’t go or you’ll be having it again’, but my heart swayed it away. Our eyes met. They had the

same eyes. Eyebrows down and a tint of grief within. Next thing I knew, I was sitting down next to her. She

spoked. “Bata, go away, malungkot ako (I’m sad). There it is again, the same word, that overused word that

many people use to tell that they feel sorrow, misery, desolated. My head started thinking about it again.

I tried stopping it but the past is coming back again. I began to remember it.

*Ophhh!* As I struggle to open the sliding door. “ Ugh! When is my dad going to fix this sliding door?”

It’s been days, since all of our family members wrestle with the door. The blazing heat started playing

with my head (As the warmth of the sun burnt me) and cicadas shouting everywhere causing my ear to bleed. I soon thought I needed it. Then a barrage of text messages made my phone alive. It was her. It was her again. Did it happen again? I reached for my phone deep inside my bag, I knew something was wrong. My hands became

more and more tremulous. In addition to that, my head started filling with made-up stories, the feeling

of being light-headed came. “It’s now or later” I said to myself, and I picked now. Slowly, I opened the

chat box and saw the very first text. “I’m sad again”.

I read on… “ I’m sad again. Aha, it’s the thoughts. The feeling of emptiness. The feeling of giving your

best and not ever being enough. The fear of disappointment in people’s faces when they see your failure”

Tears, tears, tears, they started to rain down from my eyes. I couldn’t help it. A precious friend of mine is

saying bad things about herself... I read on more. “ The feeling of letting everyone down: feeling powerless, dumb, hurt, numb, wrong, scared, pressured. A feeling of being too empty inside to even cry. To not feel anything, Not sad nor angry. Just empty. What it’s like to be fearful over people leaving you. Of people hurting you again. To see the look of disgust in their eyes when they see you. To always come in second. What’s the point of trying anymore? When getting over average is not good enough anymore. When you blame yourself for messing up, not only is the test but in real life. To give a cry for help, but having people dismiss it as a joke. To live just  for that moment when someone turns to you and says they're proud of you. Not just for achievements. But for hanging on. For fighting through life when times get hard. To have someone be proud and say to me ‘I’m thankful you’re in my life’ ‘thankful you’re my friend’. A burst of cries went out. Thankfully, I was home alone. By that time, my head was in circles thinking what to reply. I continued reading. “To do what I want without being judged, or laughed at. Even to have someone consider me as their best friend back. But life isn’t a book. There are no happy

endings. Everyone dies at some stage, why does it matter when tomorrow might not even come.

No one knows when their last days are. What’s the point of living with a bunch of regrets on our

shoulders? Regrets that make us hate who we are. Regrets that cause us in this position in the

first place?” You’re lucky, you wouldn’t know it”

My unremitting mind kept saying that she was saying; Another cut, another tear. Another reminder

that nobody’s here. I wanted to be there for her, someone who is a friend, telling her that she's not alone.

I stood there, just frozen as if I was a block of ice. *tap tap tap*, as dumb as I am,

I was going to text her back. Then, I thought, why can’t tomorrow be the day? In a second,

I deleted the words that I wanted to say and decided that tomorrow would be that day.

The day when we’re finally gonna talk.

I didn’t know what to reply, I wanted to just go over to her house and give her a hug. But the amount

of cowardice inside me is too much. I wanted to be brave, but worried I would just make things worse.

My hands were still trembling but worse this time. I wanted to cheer her up so I started with a “Olla!” she

always replies back with a “heyo” but I knew she wouldn’t. Driven by my emotions, I carelessly replied

”I know that I don’t get what you're feeling, but think of others of how they feel. Ask them the truth. Don’t

think that they don’t like you. You don’t have to be first to be liked or idolised. Just be yourself. There are

many people who are proud to be your friend… your best friend. Including me! Sometimes, you kinda just

have to let it through. Don’t blame yourself too much for mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes and it’s okay

. You can do whatever you want, but don’t expect that there are people who won’t judge. Some people are

just there to make fun of people. You can get through them by asking help from a friend or standing up for

yourself” I sent it. I read through it. Waited for her reply. Then it hit me. I wasn’t helping her. I was saying

my opinion. I tripped up. No wonder she was taking a long time to reply. *Bzzt* She replied back. “Byee,

and night” During that split second of reading that text. My mind was out, off, gone. I came to the

realisation that, me, myself. Is a bad person.

The next day, - during lunch time - while I was walking around, I saw her at the library laughing with her

friends with the usual smile, the usual… The moment she moved away from them, her laughter became

empty. Then I saw her eyes. Those gloomy, dark, and abandoned eyes. She snuck a glimpse at me

suggesting she was mad (she wanted to talk but her shyness came in). It’s been a year since we’ve

been friends but we’ve never actually had a proper conversation in real life. I was only her friend from another world (the other world). The world of social media. While the smells of books contaminate the air, I took some courage and decided to chase her. But with her conscious mind, she soon saw me

coming. She hurried to escape but I didn’t let her. I grabbed her hand and said. “Hi po!”

It’s been two years since our first conversation. A lot has happened since then, we started talking in

calls, talking about happiness everyday. Even dated each other. I wished it would’ve stayed that way.

But it ended. My friend, my precious friend back then is getting harder to grasp. Her hands slowly

slipping away from me. It was gonna be that way anyways, but I wanted to last longer, even for a

second longer. I wanted to be her friend again.

Another year has passed and here I am, helping a person again. I looked over to the lady and said,

I’ve been there. You just need somebody to take it in with you. After a while, we talked. I told her jokes

that made her frown to a smile. I told her about this one time when I tricked my cousin into thinking that the electric fan was

voice controlled. But I was controlling it with a remote. She burst out laughing after hearing that. As we laugh with joy and indestructible smiles, my brother suddenly called me,

*Oiiiiii! Alis na tayo kuya* (It’s time to go home). I stood up from the bench, and started walking away.

I glanced over to her one last time, I saw a smile with a wave of goodbye (she smiled at me and waved

contentedly). As gravells rans against my feet, I stared off into the midst of the ocean and wondered.

What could she be doing right now?
