Figurative Language Recap

What is figurative language?
First of all there is one other type of figurative language which is literal language.

Figurative language - A type of writing that uses, simili, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, and many more... The reason for these usement is to make the writing better.

Literal language - Writing the exact meaning behind your topic without using comparison and exaggerate.

Defining terms

Simile - Comparing a noun.
+ My friends are fast as a Cheetah.
+ This person is as tall as a Giraffe.
+ The teachers in Hornby High School are wonderful as a beautiful garden.

Alliteration - Repeating the same word or the same sound.
+ Seashells, seashells by the sea shore.
+ A sheep should sleep in a shed.
+ The terrible tiger tore the towel.

Metaphor - Applying a word or a phrase that is not really a literal saying.
+ That voice is music to my ears
+ You howl like a dog crying all night.
+ Greg is a walking encyclopedia.

Idiom - Basically an expression that really doesn't mean it.
+ Crossing that bridge is a piece of cake.
+ I am on top of the world.
+ Easier said than done.

Personification - Using human characteristics to something non-human.
+ The wind howled all night
+ The leaves dance through the lawn.
+ The sun greeted everyone "Good Morning".

Hyperbole - A statement that aren't supposed to be taken literally.
+ Ten thousand oceans cannot wash away my guilt.
+ My bag weighs a ton!
+ My grandpa is older than the hills.

Onomatopoeia - A word that imitates the sound of it represents.
+ BOOM!
+ Splat!
+ Zonk...

Assonance - Using a repetition of the same vowels.
+ It beats... as it, sweeps... as it, cleans.
+ The light of the fire is a sight.
+ The crumbling thunder of the seas.

Consonance - Repeating the same consonant sound in the beginning, middle or at the end.
+ The lumpy, bumpy road.
+ The string was strong.
+ Some mammals are clammy.
